CBD and Alcohol
Generally speaking, the jury is out when it comes to smoking marijuana after consuming alcoholic beverages. Some people think smoking a little weed after having a few drinks is harmless, but it actually intensifies the effects of marijuana. That’s because THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, is absorbed at a higher rate when drinking alcohol. So can we mix does CBD and Alcohol? Let’s find out.
So what happens when you take those psychoactive ingredients out of the equation?
This is the question many people who use CBD regularly want to know.
Since CBD doesn’t contain any psychoactive ingredients, does it have the same effect when you mix it with alcohol (1)?
Are CBD and alcohol a power couple, or are they better off just being friends?
To better understand how CBD and alcohol function together, we need to do some digging.
The Case for Mixing CBD and Alcohol
Before we get into what experts are saying, it’s important to note that there hasn’t been a ton of research done on this topic.
With that in mind, it’s a subject that has gained traction in recent years because of CBD’s rising popularity.
Now that we’ve got our mini-disclaimer out of the way — let’s review the case for mixing CBD and alcohol.
With a growing number of CBD-infused shots, beers, and other alcoholic beverages on the market, people want to know if these products are safe.
In other words, will taking them result in adverse effects?
Jackie Harding, a scientist at cannabis research and development company Cannabistry Labs, doesn’t think so.
Harding says, “In the [small] studies I’ve seen, there wasn’t a noticeable difference between people who had alcohol and those who had alcohol with CBD.
Their experiences were in line with what happens when you have alcohol [alone].”
Doctor of pharmacy and wellness expert Lindsey Elmore added that CBD may even protect against neurodegeneration (1) and help protect the liver from alcohol-related oxidative stress.
While these experts agree that there doesn’t seem to be any obvious negative effects of mixing CBD and alcohol — caution is always the best approach.

Moderation is key.
That said, if you’re still concerned, speaking to a doctor is always a good option.
The Case Against Mixing
Some experts aren’t sold on the idea of mixing. James Giordano, professor of neurology and biochemistry at Georgetown University Medical Center, also shared his thoughts.
He says CBD and alcohol may interact if you take them between roughly four to eight hours of each other.
Giordano also says that mixing may amplify their effects.
For example, you could become potentially sleepier and sedated.
There’s also the possibility of mood swings.
This, however, is more dependent on what your natural state is while consuming alcohol.
If you’re aggressive, you may become more aggressive. If you’re happy, you could become happier.
In conclusion, there are varied opinions on mixing CBD and alcohol.
Most of the current evidence points to there being no life-threatening element to it when taken together in moderation.
However, there’s also no harm in consulting a healthcare professional, either.
